Grace Logan is one of the busiest women in Brandon. This former longtime employee of the Mississippi Department of Human Services is now retired, but you would not know it from the whirlwind of activities that occupy her days. If you see Grace around town, chances are she will catch your eye as the most fashionable person within view. As you get a closer look, you will probably notice the Curves logo somewhere on her clothing, or her purse, or her bracelet, or maybe even her shoes. As one of ten children growing up, she learned that in order to accomplish anything, you have to take care of yourself; and regular exercise is key in maintaining optimal heath. Her six years as a Curves member have given her good health and the energy to accomplish the many goals that she sets for herself – and Curves has gained a wonderful Ambassador.

  • Dorothy Leavell

  • Dorothy's tip: Same one I got from my mother, “Keep moving or the buzzards will get you!” Get up and go to Curves as regularly as possible, your body will thank you!

Dorothy Leavell is an experience. Working out at Curves with Dorothy is the fastest 30 minutes you will ever have. Aside from her wicked sense of humor, she has stories that will entertain you the whole while and make you smile even hours later. Coming from a medical family, Dorothy knows more than a little about good health and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Dorothy has suffered from epilepsy since childhood and with arthritis and degenerative disc disease since her early 20’s. Consequently, she has spent lots of money and time with appointments in physical therapy. Since starting at Curves in 2004, Dorothy says “I have not had to darken their doors or pay their fees. It has been great! I consider Curves my physical therapy option of choice. My epilepsy has returned but I don’t let it stop me! The staff and fellow members of Curves are a great support group.” The name Dorothy is considered by most to be a fairly common name, but the people who know Dorothy Leavell know that there is nothing common about her. She is an extraordinary woman and faithful Curves member

Most people wonder why Beverly Smith goes to Curves. After all, she has been a dance instructor and educator for 45 years! Knowledge of the human body and how it works is second nature to Beverly. She comes from a strong family who valued physical activity as an important component of a healthy life. Her father died last year at the age of 93 and her mother is still going strong, also well into her 90s. Beverly’s brush with melanoma cancer in the 1980s reinforced her determination to adhere to a health lifestyle. After all, she has a busy life and people who depend on her being there: her husband of 43 years, Dennis; her two sons; her two grandchildren; and hundreds (maybe thousands) of students and former students. So, why does Beverly Smith go to Curves? She knows that a happy, healthy, and long life are not a given. You have to work at it. Wellness and fitness are a total body endeavor and you must take care of your bones and muscles – all of them. And Curves does just that. Beverly likes to exercise because it gets her going in the morning, helps her to sleep at night, she feels better, and she meets new friends – all good reasons to go to Curves – and the bonus: it’s fun!
